The chakra system is divided into seven zones.  Each zone have energy that must flow freely. When energy becomes block in a chakra, it triggers physical, mental, or emotional imbalances. These imbalances are manifest in symptoms such as anxiety, lethargy, or poor digestion. However, when the chakras are balanced by doing chakra yoga, the whole body works in harmony. We feel elevated, energized and whole.

Thousands of years ago, it was revealed that an intelligent mechanism in the body is responsible for the process of spiritual awakening itself. The subtle body is a part of you that you can’t see or touch. It’s where your energy flows. These subtle areas are referred as Chakras.

The word “Chakra” is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “wheel”. Literally translated from the Hindi. It means “Wheel of spinning Energy”. A chakra is like a whirling, vortex like, powerhouse of energy.

It’s important to know the seven major chakras located in the body. Chakra’s knowledge is important for doing chakra yoga. Here is a quick rundown of each chakra.

  1. Root chakra

Color: Red unearthing

Element: Earth

Location: Base of the spine, tailbone

Related Body Functions: Elimination of waste and toxins, core balance, pelvic floor

Purpose: First chakra is a seat of physical vitality and the fundamental urge to survive. It regulates those mechanisms which keep the physical body alive.  The main aspect of root chakra is innocence.

2. Sacral or pelvic chakra

Color: Orange

Element: Water

Location: Two inches below the belly button in the lower abdomen

Related Body Functions: Lower digestion and absorption, immune system, sexual organs

Purpose: The energy of sacral chakra is the center for creating relationships of all kinds.  It is where we develop an inward sense of self. We also develop an outward awareness of others, ego, sexuality, and family and defined as we work with this energy.  The feelings of other people are directly perceived through mastery of this chakra’s energy.

3. Solar plexus chakra

Color: Yellow

Element: Fire

Location: Around the point where the ribs meet in the middle of your abdomen

Related Body Functions: Upper digestion, stomach, and diaphragm

Purpose: Located at the center of the body it is the place where physical energy is distributed. It is the center for unrefined emotions and personal power.  It is the center that gives us the sense of complete satisfaction and contentment.  Our creativity is fueled by our power of will.

4. Heart chakra

Color: Green

Element: Air

Location: Center of the chest, on the breast bone

Related Body Functions: Breathing, cardiovascular function

Purpose: The center of real, unconditional affection, spiritual growth, compassion, devotion and love. It is the bridge connecting the lower and higher energies of our being and is the place where resides our Spirit, our true Self, free and independent.

5. Throat chakra

Color: Blue

Element: Ether or space

Location: In the throat in the Adam’s apple area

Related Body Functions: Taste, swallowing, speaking, jaw tightness

Purpose: The center for communication, self-expression and creativity. This is where the inner voice of one’s truth is expressed.  It is the chakra of diplomacy, of pure relationships with others, and of playful detachment. Speaking with knowledge of our inter-connectivity through Spirit reflects mastery of this energy.

6.  Third eye chakra

Color: Indigo

Element: Light

Location: In the forehead, between the eyes

Related Body Functions: Sight, decision-making, perception

Purpose: The seat of intuition and direct spiritual vision; it is here that we visualize things through our “third eye” of intuitive knowledge.  The opening of the third-eye corresponds with spiritual awakening. It is the chakra of forgiveness and compassion.

  1. Crown chakra

Color: Violet

Element: Cosmic energy

Location: On top of or just above the head

Related Body Functions: Mental peace and connectedness

Purpose: This chakra represents the highest level of consciousness and enlightenment.  It is the connective center to spirit. This center integrates all the chakras with their respective qualities.  Mastering the lower vibrational aspects of our being we reside in the full awareness that we are spiritual beings living a human existence.

  1. Connect to Mother Earth: Take a walk in nature

A simple walk barefoot on grass or a sandy beach will do wonders to ground you. Hug a tree, go hiking in the wilderness, or visit a local park. You don’t have to live in the countryside or mountains to strengthen this connection with Mother Nature.

Grounding yourself will give you the experience of “I am here, and I am safe” and this presence is so essential to your health. Take time out of your day to make sure you make this connection and you will automatically strengthen your Root Chakra.

  1. Calm your Body and Environment with Water

The physical problems of a poorly functioning second chakra are often the kinds of things that breed shame if the health issues concern their sexuality. One way to heal the shame is to soak for at least 20 minutes in a bath of warm water with one pound each of sea salt and baking soda.

Imagine all your guilt and shame dissolving in the bath water and being washed away as you say: “I speak the truth and reclaim my true nature. I am pure. I am clean.” Water is healing, and immersing yourself in water on a regular basis is a self-nurturing habit.

  1. Get Moving

You can balance your third chakra through physical movement, especially outside in the sun in the early morning or before sunset. Don’t get too warm if you tend to be angry or short-tempered. Physical movement awakens and recharges your body.

  1. Love a Pet

It is through your heart chakra that you can come to feel the presence of unconditional, unlimited love for yourself, for all beings, for the world and beyond. One of the best ways to boost your heart chakra is through giving and receiving love with a pet. Our pets love us unconditionally and make it safe for us to learn to love again.

Do you have room in your life to adopt a dog or cat? You can feed your heart chakra and at the same time change this animal’s life forever in a positive way. No room or time to adopt your own? What about visiting your local shelter or even just visiting a friend’s friendly pet and sharing some love with them.

  1. Express Yourself: Use your Voice.

We can tune up our fifth chakra by expressing ourselves more clearly and exploring our creativity. All creativity is a way to communicate what we feel. Use your voice and read out loud your favorite book or poem. Write something yourself and recite it. Sing a song in the shower, in your car wherever.

When your fifth chakra is in balance, you can live your dreams and visions, your greater purpose. Let yourself be who you are and give yourself a voice.

  1. Visualize and Find your Inner Sight

You can boost “third eye” chakra by working to rid yourself of the clutter in your mind so you can “see” more clearly. Daily meditation is a wonderful way to get rid of old beliefs and thought patterns that are holding you back. When you have awakened the sixth chakra, you are in touch with inspiration, insight, wisdom, and vision.

  1. Invite the Divine

When our crown chakra is open, our perception is clearer, broader, and we are allowed to not only see our daily patterns, but also the deep metaphysical patterns of our lives. Meditation is a powerful tool to boosting crown chakra. Perhaps prayer or communion with nature will assist as well.
